It's not called a relaxation album for nothing. Heliography has succeeded in lulling me into a delicious dreamy state more than once - and I'm not an easy sleeper. So top marks for that. At the same time, never listen to this album while driving or operating machinery. The great thing about Heliography is that Iain Morland succeeds in creating a story. Most ambient music never achieves that. Morland starts off with gentle simplicity and innocence in tracks like Cloud Refuge and History of the Sky. Then a quality of wistfulness and yearning enters in The Years that intensifies in Vapour and Moss. The suspense builds in Sunweaver and Leaves of Coral. Sunweaver is a personal favourite of mine because of the drama - listen and you'll see what I mean. Windflight provides the climax, when everything comes together and creates a sense of fulfillment. The denumont of Glass Shores is perfectly titled and placed, injecting a feel of fragility at the end, a tender parting of ways. This album is
fantastic to listen to while practicing yoga or tai chi or pilates because it lulls one into just the right sense of hypnotic, meditative movement. I love to put it on while having a bubble bath or just sitting late at night and gazing at the stars. Heliography is romantic and wistful so it makes a great present for loved ones. You'll love it.
